My New Chef Boss

I was like a headless puppet. Titi went on vacation, and I didn’t know who I was supposed to help now. The other guy was moved to the macaron station, and I was just walking around, waiting for someone to tell me where I should be.

It was 7:30, time to start working, and I was just about to go back to arranging some toppers (the head baker told me to do it in the meantime) when I saw Melanie, who was now working at the tarts, mini, and pound cakes station. She had just stepped out of the freezer when the head baker told her, "She is with you"—meaning me.

So now, Melanie is my boss. I’m glad because I like her. She’s super chill but fast, talented, and hardworking. She’s a leader, kind to me, and, when she asked for my name, she actually remembered it perfectly (which doesn’t always happen).

Today, she had me filling an endless number of silicone pound cake molds with carrot batter. There were four huge containers of batter, and I had to weigh out 1,200 grams per mold. I used a ladder and a spatula, but the batter was thick. At first, it was fine, but after a while, my hand started to hurt—not that I cared. Once I finished, I started filling mini molds with orange batter using a piping bag, but I didn’t get to finish because it was time to go home.

When I got home, no one was there because my sister had gone to the doctor. On Saturday, she woke up with a fever and wasn’t feeling well. As soon as I arrived, I had to make lunch. I cooked chicken soup and rice, but I wasn’t in the mood for soup, so I ate rice with egg and cheese instead.

When my sister got home at 2 p.m., I served her the soup, but she said it was salty (although my mom and I didn’t think so). Later, I made estofado de
pollo
for my dad before he left on a trip. Then, my mom came home from work and checked on my sister.

Today, I also went back to watching One Piece, which I had paused at episode 982. I’m at the Wano arc, right when they’re about to reach Onigashima. I had stopped watching because I love it so much that I didn’t want to catch up too quickly. But that was months ago, so it was time to continue. However, I only managed to watch one episode because I felt drained and exhausted. My hands and fingers were sore, my head hurt, and I felt slightly feverish. I couldn’t even exercise.

My dad left for his trip at 5 p.m. I went to bed at 7 p.m.—but not before taking a shower, changing my sheets, and finally getting a solid 10 hours of sleep. And after that, I felt completely recharged.
